What the four suits govern

Published cartomancy systems disagree about which suit counts in which unit. This site uses the correspondence above throughout, so that a reading here stays consistent with itself — if you learned a different one, keep yours and read the ranks the same way.

How this differs from tarot

The two decks are relatives. Hearts are Cups, Diamonds are Pentacles, Clubs are Wands, Spades are Swords, and every card here links to its tarot counterpart. But the traditions ask different questions. Tarot is built for meaning: what this is about, what it costs you, who you are inside it. Cartomancy is built for circumstance: what is coming, from which direction, and roughly when.

Two things the playing deck has that tarot does not. Timing is structural — the suit gives the unit and the rank gives the count, so a Three of Clubs is about three days and a King of Spades is about thirteen years. And repetition carries meaning: three Aces in one spread say something the three cards do not say apart.

One place the decks do not line up. Tarot has four court cards to a suit and the playing deck has three. The Jack stands in for the Page; the Knight has no counterpart here at all.
