Love & Relationship Spread

5 cards · Intermediate · about 10 minutes

Most love spreads fail the same way: they ask what the other person feels and stop there. That is one card's worth of information and a whole evening's worth of anxiety. This spread gives the other person exactly one position and spends the rest on the thing you can actually influence — what you are bringing, what the connection is built on, what is grinding against it, and where the two of you are pointed. Read honestly and it stops being a mind-reading exercise and starts being useful.

The layout

When to use it

A relationship you are actually in, or one specific person you keep circling. Not 'will I find love' — that is a different question and a different spread.

The positions

  1. 1

    You

What you bring to this — your real posture, hopes included, defences included.

  2. 2

    Them

Where they stand. One card, deliberately: their inner life is theirs, and the cards only glimpse it.

  3. 3

    The Bond

What actually holds you together — which is often not what either of you would say.

  4. 4

    The Strain

What pulls against it. The recurring argument underneath the arguments.

  5. 5

    Where It Leads

The direction of travel if both of you keep doing what you are doing.

How to read it

Readings here are three cards — past, present and future. It is the spread underneath every other one on this page, and the fastest way to feel how positions change a card.

Questions about this spread

Can I read this about someone who does not know I am reading about them?

Yes, and keep the weight where it belongs. Card 2 is a glimpse of a position, not access to a person. Anything you do with this reading should be something you would be comfortable telling them you did.

What does it mean if the same card appears for both of us?

Usually that you are mirroring each other — same defence, same hope, same avoidance — and each of you thinks it is coming from the other side. It is one of the most useful results this spread produces.

Does this spread work for friendships and family?

It works for any two-person bond. Only the language changes: 'the bond' and 'the strain' are as real between siblings as between partners.
