Year Ahead Spread

12 cards · Intermediate · about 25 minutes

Twelve cards, one per month, read as a season rather than a schedule. The trap is treating card seven as an appointment in July. It is not; it is the weather of that stretch — the theme you will be working with when you get there. Read as weather, a year spread is genuinely useful: it shows you where the heavy months cluster, where the open ones are, and when to plan the thing that needs room.

The layout

When to use it

A birthday, a new year, or any threshold where you want the shape of what is coming rather than an answer to one question.

Readings here are three cards — past, present and future. It is the spread underneath every other one on this page, and the fastest way to feel how positions change a card.

Questions about this spread

Should the year spread start in January or on my birthday?

Whichever threshold you actually feel. A birthday year tends to read more personally; a calendar year lines up better with work. Pick one and be consistent, so the readings can be compared.

What if a month's card makes no sense at the time?

Leave it. Year spreads are read twice — once when laid, once in hindsight — and the second reading is where they teach you most. Photograph the layout.

Can I add a thirteenth card for the year as a whole?

Yes, and it is worth doing. Draw it last, place it in the centre, and read it as the title of the year rather than a thirteenth month.
