Three-Card Spread
3 cards · Beginner · about 5 minutes
Three cards is the smallest reading that still tells a story. One card gives you an impression; three give you a direction — where the thing came from, what it is doing now, and where it is heading if nothing changes. That last clause matters. The third card is not a prophecy. It is the trajectory you are currently on, which is exactly the thing you are allowed to change.
The layout
When to use it
Any question, any day. If you are not sure which spread you want, you want this one.
The positions
- 1
Past
The root. What set this situation in motion, or what you are still carrying from it.
- 2
Present
Where you actually stand right now — including the part you have been avoiding looking at.
- 3
Future
Where this is heading on its current course. A forecast, not a sentence.
How to read it
- ✦Read them left to right as one sentence before you interpret any card alone. The story is in the movement between them, not in the three meanings stacked up.
- ✦Notice the suits. Three Cups is an emotional matter; three Pentacles is a material one; a mix says the question is being fought on two fronts at once.
- ✦If the third card unsettles you, ask what the second card would have to change for it not to arrive. That is the reading's actual advice.
Pull it now
Readings here are three cards — past, present and future. It is the spread underneath every other one on this page, and the fastest way to feel how positions change a card.
Draw your three cards ✦Questions about this spread
Can I use the three-card spread for a yes or no question?
You can, but it will answer a better question than you asked. Three cards describe a situation and its direction; if you need a straight verdict, use a one-card pull and accept its bluntness.
What if all three cards are reversed?
Usually it means the question is stuck rather than doomed — the energy is turned inward or blocked at every stage. Read them upright first to see what is being held back, then ask what is doing the holding.
How often should I pull three cards on the same question?
Once, and then leave it. Re-drawing until the cards agree with you is the fastest way to stop learning anything from them. Come back when something has actually changed.
